German
artist Christian
Jankowski creates parallel realities out of conversation,
improvisation, and shared experiences, frequently transforming
himself and playing with the elusive potential of the future.
For his first solo exhibition in New York, Jankowski presented
three works at SI in the winter of 2001: My Life as a Dove,
1996; Singing Customs Officers, 1999; and The Matrix Effect,
2000. On February 19, Jankowski will return to SI to discuss
his work, including his works included in his SI exhibit,
and his upcoming inclusion in the 2002 Whitney Biennial.
"Christian Jankowski
( &) is a sweetheart. Like Rirkrit Tirawanija and Gillian Wearing, he takes
the relatively cold matter of Conceptual Art and melds it into something
warm but not gooey funny but not satirical. He doesn't so much critique
society as mingle with it and occasionally tactfully collaborate with it.
( &) Its three video works include one of the season's hits." - Roberta
Smith, The New York Times, January, 2002 |
