Swiss Institute | 38 St. Marks | CURBED NEW YORK
Mar 06 2018
The Swiss Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to contemporary art, is edging closer toward debuting its new East Village home.
The organization announced that it has raised $3.5 million of its $5 million capital campaign to fund its new headquarters, which will replace a Chase bank branch located on the corner of St. Marks Place and Second Avenue. Instead of a new ground-up building, the current structure is being fully renovated by Annabelle Selldorf’s Selldorf Architects and will be comprised of with a library, bookstore, usable rooftop, and spaces for exhibitions and public projects.
Formerly located in Soho, the Swiss Institute was forced to seek a new permanent location after the lease on its most recent permanent home, at 18 Wooster Street, expired, reports ArtForum.
The new 7,500-square-foot building is set to open on June 21 and will debut a series of semi-permanent, site-specific installations, including a “Hermes Fountain” on the roof deck by Swiss artist Meret Oppenheim.
