Description
Where does the fake art in movies and on TV come from? Stemming from this question, FADE IN explores the intersection of fine arts and on-screen entertainment, documenting a two-part group exhibition where artists reclaim agency in the narrative representation of their own life and work. Premiered at Swiss Institute in New York, followed by a sequel at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade, FADE IN considers the filmic transition from prop to image to art object, and stages an inquiry into whether fictional depictions in mass media ultimately have greater influence in defining a collective understanding of art than art itself does. Referencing film and television works ranging from the masterpieces of European auteurs (Teorema, La Collectionneuse) to ex-Yugoslavian cult classics (Otvorena Vrata, WR: Mysteries of the Organism) to Hollywood sensations (9 1/2 Weeks, The Hunger Games), FADE IN includes artworks, commissioned texts and original contributions.
