The artist Shuang Li loves My Chemical Romance. The rock band, fronted by Gerard Way, has attracted a cult following since its inception in the early aughts. Known for a campy style and emo aesthetics, My Chemical Romance––sometimes referred to as the acronym MCR–– has traveled far beyond the band members’ native New Jersey, even reaching Li’s small town in Southeast China. The artist, born in 1990 and now based between Geneva and Berlin, draws on her love of MCR for this exhibition at the Swiss Institute. She infuses video clips of concertgoers with people dressed up in military uniforms. She creates large architectural forms that hold papier-mâché shoes. She dreams up sculptures that take on many forms, including a heart. Ultimately, she’s exploring the relationship between the internet and humankind.
