Film Series | Marching with the Kasama

SI is pleased to present a weekly series of film screenings taking place during Rafał Scoczek's offsite solo exhibition, Kino Drift. 

The screening series draws on Fernando Solanas and Octavio Getino's 1969 manifesto “Towards a Third Cinema,” which called for a cinema that was democratic and popular: independently produced, politically militant, formally experimental, and focused on anti-colonial, anti-imperialist struggle as well as the lives of oppressed people.

Taking heed of the manifesto's critique of passive spectatorship and its argument for a critical and engaged mode of viewing that transforms the screening into a social and pedagogical environment, the series similarly treats each screening as a structured event for watching and discussing films together. Scoczek has invited various collectives who actively adopt these strategies in their practice.

This screening features the documentary Marching with the Kasama, which offers a glimpse into the Philippine revolutionary struggle. Through voices of peasants, workers and guerilla fighters the film portrays a movement fighting for land, liberation, and people's power. The presentation of the footage is not a finished film, but rather an outline and, in itself, part of an ongoing process. The filmmakers aim to apply the method of the mass line to filmmaking, considering the dialectical relationship between the audience and the filmmakers as part of its production. Exchanges with Western audiences, the Filipino masses, and militants are thus incorporated into the development, interpretation, and distribution of the material.
