Rirkrit Tiravanija is globally renowned for transforming art into situations of participation and exchange, creating works that center hospitality, social interaction, and the shared experience of everyday life over the production of discrete objects. In this proposal, the artist invites viewers to participate in a lottery which grants the winner a key to the artist’s apartment. All lottery tickets will have number combinations possible with 1, 0, and 2 in the Thai lottery format, with 21 referring both to the artist’s apartment number and his birthday, which makes it his lucky number. In this way, Tiravanija’s work collapses distinctions between an artwork and mechanisms of gifting. Characteristic of his practice, it shifts value away from material possession toward encounter and social relation, while simultaneously interrogating ideas of trust, exclusivity, and access. By converting a deeply personal space into a conceptual framework governed by chance, the proposal transforms domesticity itself into a site of speculation and social negotiation.
