Pre-teen Program with Free Arts NYC

Twice a year during the school year, SI partners with Free Arts NYC to offer multi-session hands-on workshops in the SI Reading Room. Students from 2nd to 5th grade come together to explore SI exhibitions through guided conversations and art-making activities and take trips to surrounding arts organizations and galleries. Taking thematic and material inspiration from artworks and artists discussed, students make work that speaks to their unique experiences, interests, and identities.

Previous topics of exploration have included: the science of art, fantasy and collaboration, maps without borders, environmentally conscious and "green" art, observational and imaginative approaches to drawing, mythical worldbuilding, and more.

Free Arts NYC empowers youth from underserved communities through art and mentoring programs to develop their creativity, confidence, and skills to succeed.
